Shortly before the $2 note was replaced by the two dollar coin in February 1996, the Bank of Canada released a special series of uncut sheets of 40 $2 notes. These were available only by special order directly through the Bank of Canada. They were always sold at a premium and were never available through the regular banking system. These sheets are highly sought after and are rarely available in the marketplace today. Many collectors choose to frame and display these uncut sheets. The sheets of notes are shipped carefully wrapped and rolled in a shipping tube. $2 notes were printed for the Bank of Canada by BA Banknote company in a 5 x 8 format, and by Canadian Banknote Co. in a 4 x 10 format. This set included both formats with the final Bonin-Thiessen signatures. The total number of $2 sheets released in both formats is estimated to be about 50,000, making these sheets significantly scarcer than the $1 sheets which were released in 1989. The collection also includes Canada's last 25 ct note dated 1923 and discontinued in 1932, and an uncut pair of 1973 $1 notes issued for collectors.
